THE TWO MEN ON EMMAUS ROAD

This wonderful story is found in the Bible, in the Gospel of Luke, Chapter 24.  Easter was slowly coming to a close.  The sun was beginning to set and it was late in the afternoon when two men decided to go home from Jerusalem and walk the seven long miles to Emmaus.  These two men were friends of Jesus and they were very, very sad.  They had been in Jerusalem this past week and had seen their beloved Teacher and Master, Jesus, be put on a cross and killed and buried in a tomb.

As they were walking home, they were talking sadly about all these things saying, "We thought he was going to be the Savior, the Messiah, our King.  What happened?  We really believed in him and here he is gone!"  While they were walking, a man came and started walking beside them.  It  was Jesus, but they didn't recognize Him - they didn't know who He was.  Jesus said to hem, "What are these words that you are talking about to each other as you are walking?"  Then they stopped, stood still, and looked at Him, and one named Cleopas said. "Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem and you don't know what has happened here these last days?" And Jesus said to them, "What things?"  “Well the things all about Jesus the Christ.  He did wonderful things.  He made the blind see and the lame walk and he told us all about God, but the chief priests and the rulers had him put to death, and we were hoping he was going to be our King.  This morning some women went to the tomb and they said angels told them that He was alive, that he had risen.   But we don’t believe it.  And then Jesus said to them, “Oh, foolish men.  Are you so slow of heart that you will not believe in all the old scriptures and Bible writings that said that the Messiah would come to earth and He would suffer and die on the cross, and that also he would rise again.  Why don't you believe?  He HAS risen!"

As they walked the dusty road to Emmaus, Jesus told them all about Moses and Abraham and Isaiah.  They had great joy and peace as they listened to this man teach them.  Finally, they got into their town and close to their home, and just as they were by the front door, Jesus was starting to walk on and was saying goodbye.  And they said, "Oh, no.  No sir, come in and have supper with us.  It is so late.  Why don't you stay with us?"   And they invited Him into their house.

So Jesus came in and they had a wonderful supper that the ladies had prepared of some bread and cheese and broiled fish.  As Jesus blessed the bread and prayed over it and broke it and then He passed it out, suddenly the men recognized Him!  They knew who He was!   It is Jesus, our Master, our Teacher!" and they were so excited.

All of a sudden, before they could really do anything, Jesus vanished!  He disappeared!  They looked at each other and were so excited and filled with joy.  It was wonderful.  They didn’t even stay home and go to bed.  They were so excited they got up from the table, they went from the house and they walked all the way back to Jerusalem, seven long miles in the dark.  They wanted to hurry to tell their friends and disciples that they had seen Jesus and talked to Him.  Jesus was alive.

When we know Jesus and believe in Him, then we will also want to hurry and tell our friends all about our King.
