FEAST AT PENTECOST
This wonderful story is found in the Bible, in the Book of Acts, Chapter 2. It was an exciting time in the City of Jerusalem. People were coming from all around the country to celebrate the feast of Pentecost. There were people from Egypt and Rome, as well as all the Jewish people from Judea and Galilee Pentecost was an exciting festival time. It came 50 days after Easter. It was a time when the people celebrated God's abundance of wheat and grain.
They were to come to the City of Jerusalem and go to the big, big temple and sacrifice goats and lambs to God. Now when all this was happening in the city, there were 120 people quietly praying in a room in a house close to the temple. These people were the followers of Jesus. Jesus had ascended into heaven on a cloud about ten days before and he told them to wait in Jerusalem for the coming of the Holy Spirit. They were praying together these men and women of God, when all of a sudden they heard a sound like a mighty roaring wind. It got very loud and filled the room. Then they saw little tongues of fire above everybody’s head. There was a flame that looked like fire, but it didn't burn.
You see, the Holy Spirit had come and they were filled with power and understanding and they started speaking to one another about the Lord Jesus and what he had done. But what was so exciting and marvelous, is as the people ran in from the outside on the streets to see what all the noise and commotion was about, they heard in their own language all about the Lord Jesus and how He loved them and how He had died on the cross for them and how He rose from the dead and ascended into heaven. Each man heard in his own language! The Egyptian heard it in his Arabic and the Roman in his Latin. They were amazed. They said, "Aren't all these men and women in here Galilean. How come we can hear and understand them in our own language?” Then somebody else started making fun of them and said, "Oh, look at those silly people. They must be drunk with wine.” And then Peter stood up and said, "Oh no, good people. We are not drunk with wine. Why, it's early in the morning. It's only nine o’clock in the morning.” And then Peter talked to them. He told them all about Jesus. It was a magnificent sermon. At first the people were sad. They felt bad that Jesus had been put on the cross and they wanted to know more about Him. They said, “What can we do to be saved?” And so the disciples told them that they must ask forgive of their sins, believe in Jesus and be baptized.
What a marvelous day this was! Over 3,000 people believed in Jesus that day. And now because these men and women who loved Jesus, and had the Holy Spirit, they were able to now go out into the whole world and tell about the wonderful work of Jesus, that He was God and the Savior of the world.
And when you receive Jesus into your heart and believe in Him and are saved, you also receive the Holy Spirit and then you can tell others.
