ANGEL GABRIEL

This story is again about the angel Gabriel.  Remember, angel Gabriel lives up in heaven with God.  One day God sent him down to earth with a wonderful message.  In a little town called Nazareth, in a little white house, a house with two windows and a door, there lived a young girl whose name was Mary.  Actually, she could have lived in a palace, because she really was a princess, because she was related to the line of King David.  But nobody in Nazareth knew this, and right now she just lived in a little house, and she wasn't very rich.

Near to Mary lived a carpenter.  His name was Joseph, and he worked very, very hard with his saw and his hammer, to make things out of wood.  Joseph and Mary loved each other and they were going to get married, and they were going to live in a little house in Nazareth.

One day, while Mary was all alone in her house, a voice said to her, "God loves you, Mary.  You are the most favored woman in all the world."  When Mary looked up she saw an angel and it was the angel Gabriel, and he wore a wonderfully bright, white robe, and his face was shining as the sun, and his eyes were warm and kind as he looked at her.  Mary was a little bit afraid.  What can he mean, she wondered.  The happiest, most favored woman in the world...am I this woman?

"Don't be afraid, Mary," said the angel.  "I am going to tell you something wonderful.  The Lord God himself has sent me to you.  In a little while you will have a baby son, and you will name him Jesus.  And when the baby is grown up he will be the king, just like David, except he will be the king of heaven and earth."

When Mary heard this her heart sang, because she was beginning to understand.  The child would be the Saviour, who would make his people happy.  She was the one chosen to be the mother of the child.  Now she was the happiest woman in the world. But Mary thought to herself, and she said, "Who will be the father of the child...because I am not yet married?"  "God himself will be the father," answered the angel.  "This is why he won't be an ordinary child.  He will be a holy child, and he will be called the 'son of God'."

Then Mary bowed her head and she prayed, "May it all happen just as you have said."  When Mary looked up the angel Gabriel was gone.  He had returned to heaven.  He had brought the most wonderful message that had ever been brought to the world.
